Criminal appeal law - ineffective counsel.
RESULTS: Reduced Sentence – Ineffective Assistance of Counsel

Meet our client, an 18-year-old African refugee who found himself facing a daunting sentence for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. What seemed like an open-and-shut case was anything but. Attorneys Jacob Blizzard and Morgan Walker dug deeper and discovered a far more complex story.

The Untold Story

Our client endured unspeakable horrors from a young age, living through a genocide event in Africa. This trauma led to trust issues and separation from his family. At just 16, he tragically witnessed his best friend’s murder. Despite this harrowing background, none of this crucial evidence was presented during his original sentencing hearing—a clear case of ineffective assistance of counsel.

Fighting for Justice

Determined to right this wrongful judgment, we fought tirelessly through the post-conviction 11.07 writ of habeas corpus process. Our efforts paid off when the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals recognized the injustice and ordered him to be resentenced.

A New Beginning

Upon reassessment, the trial court took into account the new mitigating evidence that his previous counsel had failed to introduce. Our client’s sentence was reduced to 9 years. Having already spent 4 years behind bars, he is now eligible for parole in just 6 months instead of the previous 2.5 years.

A Message of Hope

This is more than just a legal victory; it is a story of justice prevailing. Our team, Jacob Blizzard and Morgan Walker, are proud to have helped this resilient African refugee find hope in the face of adversity after enduring ineffective counsel. This is a story of justice prevailing, of fighting for those who have endured unspeakable trauma.
